SacJEF is participating in this year’s Race for the Arts! This will be a fun way to promote the Foundation to the greater Arts community, and we need a minimum of 10 people to agree to walk all or part of the route in order to receive the entry discount.
Race Day is Saturday, August 24th.
Entry fee (discounted) is $24 and includes a Race T-shirt.
Registration is 7am at William Land Park and the race begins at 8:35 am
We plan to also have an informational booth at the park that day, so if you can’t walk but want to join the fun, we would welcome you to help man the booth – hand out flyers, etc. We are also hoping to have the TNT play in the amphitheater in the park that morning.
Once you have registered, it’s time to get donation pledges! We will be directing folks to our website to donate, but you can also collect on your own from friends, family, neighbors, whomever. Just have them make checks payable to SacJEF. And, donors may designate which of our programs they want their donation to benefit.

Don’t Miss the Teagarden Jazz Camp Fundraising Extravaganza
West Sacramento, CA — On Saturday, March 30th, over 50 jazz musicians comprising eight local bands will gather on the banks of the American River for this year’s Teagarden Jazz Camp Fundraising Extravaganza. The four-hour show, held from 2 to 6 p.m. at Drake’s: The Barn, will feature headliners Element Brass Band and Peter Petty—both Sammie award winning acts—plus an assortment of brass bands, swing bands and New Orleans-style hot jazz ensembles to help send deserving students to the Teagarden summer jazz camp. There is no cover charge, but a suggested $20-per-person donation will help bring the gift of jazz to budding young musicians.
As the world’s oldest musical camp focusing specifically on early jazz, Teagarden has a long list of celebrity alumni from pop star Carly Rae Jepsen to jazz singer and trumpeter Bria Skonberg. Camp instructors are themselves highly accomplished musicians who have played with some of the biggest names around the world. In Sacramento, it’s hard to find a jazz band that does not have at least one or two musicians who have taken part in the Teagarden camp as either an instructor, a one-time student, or both.
The camp is an annual production of the Sacramento Jazz Education Foundation, a nonprofit whose mission is to preserve and promote early jazz. Camp director Bill Dendle says the camp is always a labor of love. “Traditional jazz is contagious,” says Dendle. “Children are innately musical and creative, and can profit on many levels from learning about jazz and improvisation.”

About the Teagarden Jazz Camp
Since 1986, the Teagarden Jazz Camp has been helping young musicians sharpen their skills under the tutelage of experienced musicians. Students aged 12–20 camp each year at Sly Park in Pollock Pines to learn the fundamentals of early jazz and improvisation techniques in an intensive week-long program, culminating with a concert on the final day in Sacramento. The 14th annual Teagarden Jazz Festival promises to be one of our best, thanks to feature artist Jim Cullum.
Internationally known cornet player and band leader, most of us know of Jim from his long running Riverwalk Jazz program on public radio. It will be a rare treat to see him perform live. Along with the Saturday festival, we are having two special concerts featuring Jim. Friday night on February 8 and a Sunday Brunch on February 10. Capitol Public Radio is a festival sponsor this year, an exciting development, and will be promoting the events. Tickets for all events are now available. You will want to purchase early to ensure a seat. Tickets are only $10 for general seating and $25 for VIP reserved seating for the Friday night concert, which will be a stand out event in the new Rio Americano Performing Arts Center, a fantastic venue for jazz music.

Do you know a student interested in improving their musical ability? Perhaps you’re a young musician who wants to join a band, or play for your own enjoyment as a hobby. The Sacramento Jazz Education Foundation offers Music Lesson Awards to students interested in developing their ability to play and perform music.
Awards are in the form of paid music lessons on the standard instruments used in jazz performance. Instruments include (among others): trumpet, cornet, trombone, clarinet, sax, piano, banjo, guitar, bass, tuba, drums, and vocals.
Awards are up to $300 and SacJEF can also match a student with a music teacher, if the student needs a referral. Applications are now open and can be submitted online or printed and mailed in. The deadline for submission is September 30, 2018.
The Sacramento Jazz Education Foundation (SacJEF) has officially launched its Instrument Match program designed to put instruments into the hands of young students learning to play music, especially jazz. Elementary to high school students in the greater Sacramento area are eligible to apply.
The Foundation accepts donated instruments, assumes any refurbishment costs, and then matches an instrument with an aspiring music student. Over the past year, the SacJEF has collected and refurbished numerous donated instruments, and is now ready to accept student applications. There is no cost to the student to apply for or receive an instrument. The student recipient will own the instrument for as long as they are using it.
The instruments available vary, but are typically those you would find in traditional jazz bands, trumpets, clarinets, banjo’s, trombones etc.
“We’ve received many fine instruments from former musicians who want their trumpet or clarinet to be used and enjoyed by the next generation.” says Leslie Barger, Chair of the program. “We also know that there are many young students who want to play music, but have no way to learn because they cannot rent or buy an instrument. The intention of our program to keep the music alive by filling this gap.”
